I wish the software had a way to detect that the person is wearing a hat in the photo. That way the software wouldn't put a nasty looking blotch or color on the person's hat.

This is true for older version of PP. Now, in this V12, it seems to be able to better detect the skin. Having said this, I must also qualify myself to tell you that all my portraits are using black graduation hat.
I believe PP may have problem if the hat is of lighter colour. But the additional step of "cutting back skin" is a pain if there are many to do.
